A baby's nervous system is immature and can't regulate stress down on its own yet. When you hold your baby close, in warmth and dim light, cortisol falls and calm slowly spreads — the baby borrows it from you until it can do it alone.

You rarely need to do anything special. Hold your baby, lower your voice a little, and let the room go darker before sleep.

Frequent awakenings are biologically normal in the first year. Sleep matures slowly, and the child wakes up to feel that you are there.

What usually helps the most is the same calm rhythm night after night. It doesn't have to be perfect. Just something recognizable that the child can rely on.

Crying is the child's way of communicating while the stress system is still building up. Being spaced out helps it mature.

A screen is designed to capture your attention, and the baby notices the moment your gaze is gone. It's harder to put down than we think - so it's rarely about willpower alone.

Pick one small screen-free moment you protect. The phone face-down at feeds is often enough.

Language grows out of the interaction between you - turn-taking, gazes and babble lay the tracks long before the first words.

Sit on the floor at your child's level, copy their sound, and add one word. And leave a little silence in between, so they get their own turn. It needn't be long or clever.

When sleep is scarce, the body reacts before the mind. A lot of what feels like disagreement is really just tiredness.

Trade one honest sentence at night. There are two of you in this, and it's usually the small repairs - not the big talks - that keep the connection alive. And remember to thank each other for the small things.

Appetite naturally fluctuates, and children are born with a strong sense of hunger and fullness. Pressure rarely moves anything the right way.

Follow your child's pace, not the spoon's. Eat together, even a little, and stop when they turn away. And try to let the meal be a calm place to meet - that often matters more than how much goes in.

The heightened vigilance is built in. A new parent's brain is turned up to protect - that's healthy, not a sign something is wrong.

Write down what you notice, and trust the pattern over time rather than one bad day. And do ask one time too many - nobody gets tired of that. It's what we're here for.

A small child's brain can't control impulses well yet. Limits need to be shown and repeated many times before they settle in.

Get low, get close, and hold the limit with a gentle voice. Show the next step, so your child knows what to do instead. That works far better than a 'no' from above.
